Camps for displaced Tamils under scrutiny - 21 Feb 09

Al Jazeera has been given first access by the Sri Lankan government to a camp in Vavuniya housing refugees from the ongoing war with Tamil Tiger separatists.

The government says the "welfare villages" meet international standards, but rights groups say they are in fact detention centres. Al Jazeera's David Hawkins reports.

Sovereignty implies rights and obligations, and that Sri Lankan state have a basic responsibility to protect its citizens from genocide and mass atrocities. No government has the right to use national sovereignty as a shield behind which it can murder its own people. The challenge for the world community is not only to state this principle, but to implement it!

If the SL gov is telling the truth then why arent the UN and other NGOs allowed to help the injured and dying Tamils. Why did they kill journalist like Wickrematunge who reported on the civilian casualty, and arrested other as terrorist sympathizers. Some of these journalists are Sinhalese. When you see them on TV during press conferences they come off as thugs, belligerent and bulling. From what I can see Sri Lanka in no democracy, and I can understand the Tamil peoples grievances.
