I named him Spoggy after a little House Sparrow that you can see here on YouTube. I loved that little Sparrow so I thought Iwould get my own hoping he would be tame. Thus, my own little Spoggy, a Java Finch - also called Java Sparrow or Ricebird. For 1 and a half years Spoggy was only finger tame but would never come to me. Then, all of a sudden about two weekends ago, he just all of a sudden started to fly on my shoulder and became hand tame.

  • how did you tame him. i heard finches are quite hard i never tried

  • Generally, as adults they are quite hard to tame. I have no idea how he got so tame. All of a sudden within two days he just started giving me kisses and flying to my shoulder. Very strange... but I'm certainly not complaining!

Of course, you can raise them from babies if you can find a breeder that has unweaned babies and is willing to show you how to hand feed them. The original Spoggy the Sparrow was raised from a baby. If you haven't already, check out the links of him to the right. :)

  • can you actually buy wild birds?

  • The only wild birds you are allowed to keep in the US - as far as I know - are House Sparrows, Starlings, and Pigeons, because they are all invasive species. All others are illegal, I'm pretty sure. So you can't sell them.

  • Just popping in to see how Spoggy the Java was doing and to give him a WINGWAVE from Spoggy in Tasmania. I can see our dear friend Javakogan has been here and given you some excellent advice :-) I will add, I am sure you know this, but it may help someone else reading this, please never give advocado to your bird. It is toxic for them. Spoggy has access to baths every day but he will still do some 'air bathing' sometimes. They use their beak to get oil from their preening gland to freshen up :-)

  • Yes, he still does his 'air bathing', and no certainly no avocados! :0)

Thanks for coming back and visiting. I only have a webcam on my pc, or I'd take more pics of his antics flying about.

Wingwaves from Spoggy II ! :0)

As Kid i saved a sick Wildlife Bird (Blackbird). When i was searching Worm`s for him then he was following me from 4th Floor down to the Ground and watched me digging Worm`s.So he learned flying back. And now he is back in Wildlife...

  • Soggy is lovely!

  • beatiful colors on that bird

  • Wow that's amazing! I never thought finches could be that tame! I always imagined them to be skittish and shy. Very pretty bird you have there :)

  • It depends on where you live. Java Finches are not wild in the US, where I am. So you can buy these here.
