This escapement is described in Lord Grimthorpe's book "A rudimentary treatise on clocks, watches and bells for public purposes". It has been reinvented many times, but it appears that Macdowall had the most success with it, by paying close attention to its proportions.

  • simple and precise

  • This escapement seems very, very efficient. Virtually no wasted rotation of the escapement. Have you tried making a long running clock with it?

  • Can I use this escapement design? All credits will go to you.

  • @Dirtboy101 - The total length of the pendulum and swinging part of the escapement is a fixed number based on physics. Everything else will come down to gear ratios.

@horolophile - This is simply brilliant.

  • i wish you could provide more specifications. (i.e. weight used, length of the pendulum and a shot of the entire mechanism, instead of just the escapement) It would make replication a lot easier.... unless you don't want people to replicate it ;)

  • me too...

  • Its completely not simple, i tried like 20 times to make one, but never ever it works 100% ok

  • This is awesome! I think I'm going to try making one. it looks simple.
