I got my HTC Legend in April 2010 and it's been working like a charm until 17.9.2010 when this weird problem suddenly occurred the first time. Sometimes this happens what you see on the video, but sometimes the screen just becomes totally unresponsive and doesn't do anything.

The screen seems to sense my finger from a distance of up to about 1cm when this lock screen problem occurs. I also think phone calls aren't getting through to me when this problem is occurring (haven't really tested this though). Once it behaved like I was trying to pinch zoom in the home screen even though I was using only one finger. Once when the problem started in the middle of writing a text message, it also took keypresses on the virtual keyboard from a distance of about 1cm.

I performed a "hard reset" to factory defaults but it didn't seem to help. Although every time I boot the phone it works normally for a random period of time from minutes to hours before the problem reoccurs.

There hasn't been any external damage to the phone.

  • because the touch screen dosent work when it laying down your got to hold you phone retard

  • @LOL89235 *facepalm* That has nothing to do with it.

  • all i can say HARD REST/ FACTORY RESET. i did it to mine last night at it works like new. :)

  • @nat50866 I did a factory reset to it a couple of times but it didn't affect anything.

  • I've aproximatively the same bug. I try a 2.2 rom, and it doesn't solve the problem. I think it's hardware.

  • @theorime42 Yes I'm sure it's hardware related. I've figured out sometimes it helps to twist the phone just slightly by grabbing the top and bottom of the phone. But even that alone doesn't always help, though usually after twisting and rebooting it works ok again. Plain reboots don't always work.

  • I've just started having the same problem!! I have 2.2 and have tried a factory reset, same issue :@:@

  • that happened to be.. i turned it off and turned it back on and it stopped doing that..

  • argh it doesnt let me post a link to the disassembly instructions that I found very helpful (better than the videos on youtube) You will have to fix the link by hand *dubdubdub* *dot* formymobile *dot* co *dot* uk *slash* htclegenddisassembly *dot* php

  • @MarvelousScape I had exactly the same problem until today. Hot weather and high humidity trigger touch screen issue. In my case it was hardware related. I changed the digitizer (that is the glass front of the screen, not the LCD itself) which did the deal. Parts are available on ebay for about 30 Euros. Instruction in disassembly are here: If you still have warranty on your phone let them deal with it! Good luck.
