The Allen Wranglers have named legendary Dallas Cowboy wide receiver Drew Pearson as their first general manager, owner Jim Smith announced today. Pearson will join head coach Chris MacKeown for the team's inaugural season in the Indoor Football League.
Pearson, 59, played at the University of Tulsa before being selected as a free agent by the Dallas Cowboys in 1973. As a Cowboy, Pearson recorded 489 receptions, 7,882 receiving yards and 50 touchdowns. He was elected to the NFL 1970's All-Decade team and had All-Pro selections in 1974, 1976 and 1977. Pearson led the Dallas Cowboys to three Super Bowl appearances, winning the title in 1978. Pearson is also known for catching the game-winning 50-yard touchdown pass from Roger Staubach that coined the phrase "hail mary."
Since his retirement in 1983, Pearson has worked as a sports broadcaster and chairman of Drew Pearson Marketing, Inc. He served as the head coach for the Dallas Texans arena football team in 1991 where he led the team to a 4-6 record. Pearson also served as general manager of the New York/New Jersey Hitmen during the XFL's lone season in 2001.
The Wranglers also announced the addition of Dart Clark, Vice President of Operations, unveiled their logo and team mascot. The mascot will be named by a naming contest. Three new players were also signed to the 2011 roster, Tyson Thompson, Aaron Gibson and Kamani Jones.
The Wranglers are one of 25 teams currently competing in the IFL. The team will host their seven home games in the Allen Event Center with the West Texas Roughnecks coming to town for the inaugural home opener on February 28, 2011. Season tickets are on sale now.
