April 24th 2010. Torisholme Road Allotments, Lancaster, filmed by Rod Savage. A swarm of bees from one of our hives. Richard and Nina from the local beekeepers Society, and Tenants of the allotment oversee three hives for us on the allotments.
One hive got too big and although its very early in the year for a swarm, they left the hive and swarmed in a nearby bramble hedge.
Richard and his wife Nina, both Doctors, placed a 'SKEP' (old fashioned domed bee-hive close by on a large cloth and swept part of the swarm down onto the cloth and placed the 'SKEP' over it. What followed over the next hour was that the remaining bees (following the Queen Bee scent) bult a bridge of bees from the swarm, downwards to the spread out cloth and using their bodies as a BRIDGE formed a BEE-LINE from the swarm back to the SKEP where the Queen Bee was waiting.
Filmed by Rod Savage (Allotments Secretary) on a small Sony 10mgp Camera with video facility , the bees were filmed on their Bee-Line from the swarm to the Skep. Rod wasn't wearing a bee suit or gloves but none of the bees stung him although they were all over him at the time.
It was a wonderful experience to witness. A pleasure to pass on.
Enjoy
