Aedh Wishes For The Cloths Of Heaven
by William Butler Yeates
------------------------------------------------
Had I the heavens' embroidered cloths,
Enwrought with golden and silver light,
The blue and the dim and the dark cloths
Of night and light and the half-light,
I would spread the cloths under your feet:
But I, being poor, have only my dreams;
I have spread my dreams under your feet;
Tread softly because you tread on my dreams.

"Aedh was a Celtic God of Death, one of the children of Lir.
Yeats seems to have used this character in some of his stories along with Ahearne and Michael Robartes and describes him as fire reflected in water" (http://oldpoetry.com/opoem/2676-William-Butler-Yeats-Aedh-Wishes-For-The-Cloths-Of-Heaven)

  • Sean quotes it incorrectly,

    It's not "under your feet" it's "beneath your feet"\

  • searching for Aedh_wishes_for_the_Cloths_of_Heaven on wikipedia was giving the same result -books might be written differently, dunno

  • This is an awesome scene. Lovely poem, made even lovelier by Sean reciting it :) Thanks for this!

  • @MrOwen2012 To be honest it sorta fits in the film, it's quite early on in the film but far enough in that you have an understanding of the events going on. A much underrated film I personally think and definitely worth watching.

  • sad scene :(

  • Wrong Music for it. I've never seen the film nor do i have a vague understanding but just wrong music. I don't know if Sean bean was a villain in it but for god sake it's Sean bean. he needs better music to die to

  • @tiago1138 I find it more in tune with Fahrenheit 451 myself.

  • Sorry but I have to ask: What movie is this scene from?

  • movie very similar to george orwell´s 1984 :)

  • This is one of the best films ever made. This scene has a very convincing scene.

  • But I, being poor, have only my dreams. I have spread my dreams under your feet; tread softly, because you tread on my dreams

    I got that tattooed on my arm a few years after seeing this movie. the words never left my head

  • I love that he hesitates
