Stephen Jay Gould (September 10, 1941 May 20, 2002) was a prominent American paleontologist, evolutionary biologist, and historian of science. He was also one of the most influential and widely read writers of popular science of his generation. Gould spent most of his career teaching at Harvard University and working at the American Museum of Natural History in New York. In the latter years of his life, Gould also taught biology and evolution at New York University near his home in SoHo.

  • @fabiolostair actually my views are beginning to morphology because science itself isis cocorrupted. I believe that evolution exists only at a micro level. Macro evolution cannot explosion the gaps that exist between hominids. So I guess you win. Aliens exist.

  • @TheAntiFascist2010 progress= simplicity to complexity......evolution= good in a specific circumstance to good in a different circumstance............the dominance of a species is only one circumstance!!...who is the retarded now?

  • This guy is retarded. Of course Evolution is progress. How else would you describe the complete dominance of a species environment? Walkin' backwards? Well, if walking backwards was beneficial to a population then we would all be staring at our past. Without a future I might add.

  • WOW

  • Is there a fuller version of this video?

  • By the way, it's funny this video starts with Freud. Freud has even less credibility than Gould and numerous psychologists have debunked the entire field of psycho-analysis as nothing but a pseudo-science. It's ironic that someone defending evolution against Creationist hogwash references someone as reliable as your average Creationist.

  • I'm a strong supporter of puncuated equilibrium (in fact, I came up with the idea entirely independently and only later learnt others had named it "punctuated equilibrium"), however I find it hard to take Stephen Jay Gould seriously as an individual. His strongly politically influenced views on anthropology are widely dismissed by the scientific community. It puzzles me why people keep bringing him up as a defense for evolution...

  • what stupid background noise to put into a video where people are trying to listen to what is said.
