Someone recently asked about doing foliage highlights, so this video seems appropriate. Hope it helps.

  • Thanks for the video, useful as always. I've noticed that very few people use the round foliage brushes, not sure if they're included in the Alexander range but they're in the Bob Ross set. In fact Bob rarely used them in his own videos. If it's so useful to get a rounded edge, surely it's easier to use one of those?

  • I thought that Bob Ross came up with the round brush, but after talking with an Alexander Master Instructor, I don't think that's true. I believe Alexander came up with the round brush first. They no longer offer the round brush, even though Bob Ross does. I think Bob rarely used the round brush because it's not really as effective as it looks. The tapered design actually made it difficult. It has too much of a taper. I had both the small and large one years ago and never liked them.

  • couldn't you get the same texture by just tapping the brush vertically on the paint? Then maybe you wouldn't get the rounded edge. why do you need a rounded edge?

  • You could simply tap and get a similar (but not the same) result if you used a brush with a flat edge such as a stippling brush.

When you create a rounded edge, it assists you in painting bushes and other foliage that has a rounded shape.

This is certainly not the only way to paint foliage.

  • I am brand spanking new to oil painting (wet on wet in particular) and found this very helpful actually... thanks very much!

I also submitted my info for the free DVD. Looking forward to it.

  • Thanks a lot. I'll get the DVD mailed out soon.
