How To Build A Wormery
Award-winning gardener Chris Beardshaw on mother natures recycling plants

Do you ever feel like your garden could be greener? Many of us have made our houses more eco-friendly but lack the knowledge to make our lawns, borders and hedges grow in a more sustainable manner. Yet there are many simple and effective steps we can take to make our gardens more environmentally sound such as using a watering can instead of a hose, installing a waterbutt to collect rain water, making our own compost or creating a wormery.

Worm composting is a method of recycling food and garden waste into a rich, dark, soil conditioner. Not only is it a low-cost way of keeping your garden in tip-top condition without the use of chemicals, its also a great way of keeping those trips to the tip to a minimum.

Yorkshire Bank and the National Trust have teamed up to encourage people to make their gardening more environmentally friendly and save money in the process with their Greener Gardens campaign. So to start you off, check out this HowTo video guide with award-winning garden designer Chris Beardshaw as he shows you how to create your own wormery, as we take a worms eye view of the sustainable stewardship of our gardens....

  • @Sara1030 lady, you need to have your ears checked...

he said "put somewhere shaded and cool" and "don't put in meat or fatty stuffs"

aren't you ashamed posting faulty comments where everyone can see?

  • @Sara1030 If the worm are in a dark place what difference could it make?

Is this all you do ? trash peoples sites up?

  • @ellie3637 Yes. And I've read that if your worms are not eating a lot of the scraps you put in the bing, it could be that the scraps have become too acidic (usually due to too many citrus scraps) and adding egg shells can help make the mixture less acidic.

  • Good video

  • Gregarious worms. Really?

  • This is great! What about the temperature? Where I am gets really cold outside. Can I bring the worms inside in my bedroom? Can the worms runway from those holes on the top?

  • Did I see some egg shells in there for food?

  • This is a good video. And wonderful way of recycling and having our own organic fertilizer.

  • Dammit ! So Close, I was looking for a video on how to - Worm a Buildery.

  • Bad worm farm! Too light, no drainage, and you do have to be choosy. No onion or citrus as the acid burns them.

No well made worm farm should ever get "smelly".
