Saint Margaret Citherow is one of England's great women heroines and her story is rooted deeply in England's turbulant history. One of the 40 martyrs of england and wales, margaret was a young wife and mother in york, living an ordinary life during a time of great persecution of England's ancient catholic faith. This young woman from York reconverted to her Catholic Faith during the persecutions and executions of Catholics by queen elizabeth I and the elizabethan government. The wife of a butcher, once she had retruned to her childhood faith, she developed a great love for the Catholic Mass and the Holy Eucharist and also helping to save the lives of the hunted Catholic priests in England. So she maintained secret Mass rooms, including one above her shop in the shambles to hide the hunted catholic priests and attend the holy sacrifice of the Mass with great love and devotion. She was eventually arrested and imprisoned at york castle when it was discovered she maintained and harboured catholic priests. Bold and brave to the end, this shining pearl of york refused to accept a trial so as to spare her family and friends and heroically faced a horrific death under English law. This elizabethan catholic english woman was crushed to death under a heavy door with stones under her back for the crime of hiding catholic priests. She is one of the 40 martyrs of england and wales. Saint Margaret's story is fascinating and relevant to all today for she stands out as a brave and heroic english woman and a bold defender of the truths of the catholic faith. Great. I am exploring a parish DVD club. I have videos like Therese, Ma\ria Goretti, etc. whom catholics do not get the right to see. Every parish should show films such as these. May Dowry of Mary Productions flourish.
