Capturing Sit

@captmicha Please check with your vet. There might be a physical reason that the dog is not sitting. My Murphy had his hips broken years ago and they healed crooked (before I got him) and he has two torn ACLS (one repaired). He hardley ever sits and I never ask for it because it's probably difficult for him. But he does all sorts of stuff that doesn't require using his hips nor knees. Like touch, shake, high give, scratch a board, I don't even ask him for down - incase it might hurt

I hope you don't mind that I'm asking for all this free advice :/ Just ignore me if you do. My foster dog hardly ever sits (she either stands or lies down) so it doesn't happen often enough for me to reinforce it. I was thinking it would nice to teach her this just so she has something else to learn but if there isn't a way to do this with a fearful dog if they don't volunteer it, should I just not worry about it? I did try holding a treat over her head to encourage a sit but it was a no go.
With a fearful dog, I wouldn't worry if she sits. For a family dog, I usually say you want a good sit or down. Either is fine. Sounds like you already tried luring the sit and that didn't work. When she does sit occasionally tried to say yes and toss a treat. She may do it more easily later on when she feels safer, with fearful dog sometimes you have to wait until they are ready. For now work on Down, which will be useful when she is adopted.
