I've heard stories of people growing up 5 minutes from the track. I can't even imagine how great that had to have been.
-
lets put this into perspective. pole day used to always be sold out. sold out means no less than 250,000 people. thats more than 2x the attendance of any super bowl, just to see who would start FIRST for the race

Growing up in Indy during the 1960's, We had no professional sport teams of any kind to support. For me & I think I can speak for a lot of other Hoosier's out there. That Theses Golden & Silver age race drivers were our hero's and we were their biggest & greatest fans.

one word: American Tradition!

There simply is no other place on earth that has such a power over an individual as Indy does. Whether you are a fan, driver, team member, or grounds worker you know you are some place that is truly special.

CHILLS every time I watch that video. NEVER will I be anywhere else on Memorial Day weekend than at IMS and the Indy 500. I would have to be on my death bed to miss it!! If you've never been.....you HAVE to go.

The first time I went was for pole day in 1973, I was 13, Went just about every year till 1980... Race tickets were actually me and my best friend's BEST graduation presents in 1978... The playing of Taps on Raceday still gives me goosebumps.

i think the saddest day of my life will be when i'm old and broken down and i realize that i won't see the next indy 500. that realization will probably finish me.
