sure, with the correct pedal you can get it. Maybe overdrive is not very common, but similar distortion is quite usual. You can find it in some Manson songs and Metallica too, I think...

Bass out of tune to the song a bit and your playing is really choppy. Smooth it out and other then that not a bad effort.

Occasionally I fiddle around with pianos and keyboards (not much of a player though), and I'm always tapping out rhythms with my hands and fingers.

Well, for two very good reasons. The first one is because you can never get a proper internal beat sense by playing over records, the second is that iron maiden is one of the least "tight" band ever, especially live. At the very least, if you are able to mute every instruments except drums, you might learn a bit, if of course you never tap your foot to keep the beat.
