Honda GC 160- Diagnostic

This is the overall story on this engine.
It works now but I cant run it because its too cold and water/freezing temps don't mix.

Yeah, this is why I keep my old 1988 aluminum-decked Jacobsen mower with no frills at all, with a good ol' Briggs Quantum 35 engine mounted on it. This engine has been used heavily for 23 years and still purrs like a kitten. Small engines ain't what they used to be, unfortunately. Even Briggs is building crap these days (in China, no less!)

@bbishoppcm Cant beat the oldies! This engine is doing good now, its been over a year, I dont use it much, but it hasn't failed me thus far. Still old stuff is good.

I've been watching some of these videos and I can't see any head bolts.......I hope it can be removed?

@dc5000123 I hate to tell you the bad news. These honda engines are cast as one whole upper block and one lower block. There is no removable head. The only way to get to the piston, cylinder and valves is by removing the lower part of the engine and pulling the piston out. This way you can look into the bore from bottom up.

I always wonder why they split the crankcase at an angle.

I am suprised they did that.

This motor has several bad reviews from Youtubers.

Can you image trying to lap the valves.................

@dc5000123 Yeah lapping the valves would be a nightmare. If this engine ever fails me I would just get an old 80' or 90's briggs to replace it.

Yeah I agree about the plastic camshaft thing, the vertical shaft gc160 and gc190 hondas work as they get enough oil, but the horizontal shaft engines break them due to oil starvation. I know briggs uses a plastic one but their plastic is a hell of a lot stronger....nylon I believe.....and it's not strictly "plastic", it's composite as they have a steel shaft running through the middle which the shaft is built around..they're not just plastic..hondas well i guess the gx series is better :]
