The third rail is a way of providing power to trains without an overhead system. It's a third rail (hence the name) with a current running through it On the mainlines in the UK it typically runs at 750 volts DC. The London Underground uses a 4 rail system. The 3rd rail is charged at 630 volts and the fourth is charged at 315 volts (one negative and one positive). Basically, if you touch it, you're fucked.
