Arroyo HS at the 2009 Chino Invitational Field Show Tournament

Arroyo High School's 2009 Field Show is entitled "Three Faces of Love."

This was our performance at the Chino Invitational Field Show Tournament


The music to our Opener comes from the opening to the final opera "Twighlight of the Gods" of the 4-opera cycle known as THE RING OF THE NIBELUNG'S by Richard Wagner. This portion of the music is taken from the Prologue to Act 1 of "Twilight." In this scene the hero Siegfried learns about a sleeping maiden upon a rock surrounded by fire. (Not Sleeping Beauty but similar) Only a hero who knows no fear can penetrate the wall of fire unharmed and claim the maiden as his wife. The naive Siegfried, who has never known fear, ventures into the fire in hopes that this woman can teach him what real fear is. Upon seeing her, he begins trembling and assumes that it is fear. The woman, Brunnhilde, awakens and literally puts the fear of God into Siegfried if he were to ever leave her. Siegfried has now learned fear. The two are both so overcome with genuine emotion that their relationship is consummated and both fall deeply in Love.

The music to our Ballad comes from the finale to the second opera of THE RING, called "The Valkyrie." In this scene we learn how Brunnhilde ended up asleep on the rock surrounded by fire. Prior to this scene B's father Wotan gave her strict instructions not to interfere in a fight between his son Siegmund and the hunter Hunding. Fearing her brother's death, B disobeyed and tried to protect Siegmund. Well, they both died anyway but Siegmund's girlfriend Sieglinde was pregnant so B took S away on her flying horse to protect the unborn child. (FYI, the child will grow up to be Siegfried. Yay!) (This is like a scene from Gossip Girl seriously) In short, because B interfered, daddy Wotan is really ticked off and pursues her to this rock on top of a mountain where he strips her of all her Valkyrie powers and consigns her to a mortal womans life as punishment. The music starts serious but we quickly feel Wotan's pain at having to punish and say goodbye to his most beloved daughter. The emotional conflict is unbearable in this poignant musical moment.

Who better to teach us about romantic love than an Italian! :) Our Closer comes from Giacomo Puccini's final (and unfinished) opera, "TURANDOT." I just recently found out that this opera was banned in China from 1926-1998. It was first performed there with conductor Zubin Mehta, at the Forbidden City in Beijing in 1998. It involved a humongous cast and is on the actual site where the story takes place. The DVD is available on Amazon.com. I encourage anyone who loves Puccini and large spectacle to see this. I dare you to not be overcome with emotion! Our music is taken from sections of Act 1; "Popolo di Pechino!", "Indietro, cani!", "Gira la cote!", and the finale "O Sole Vita! Eternita!". The music is very poweful, blending the ancient Chinese culture with modern Italian romantic sensibilities. Enjoy!
