Newt Gingrich promised Wednesday on Florida's space coast to create a moon colony by 2020 if elected president.
"By the end of my second term, we will have the first permanent base on the moon. And it will be American," Gingrich told the crowd of roughly 700, taking them to their feet in applause.
The former House speaker said the current space program in the country is a "tragedy" and believes his "grandiose" ideas can help fix it.
"I am sick of being told we have to be timid and I'm sick of being told we have to be limited to technologies that are 50 years old," he said, noting that by 2020 he wants to be capable to go to Mars.

  • Guys he's not suggesting that we have a moon state by 2020. He's just saying he'd open space up to that kind of development, if and when commercial space travel opens up.

  • before making other worlds habitable you still have a lot of work on earth, fuck face gringrich

  • The thought of a bigoted, psychotic, Christian moron like Newt Gingrich having influence on the moon is scary. If we reach the point of colonizing other planets and religious nonsense still spreads along to them, I will have lost all faith in humans. Can you imagine Newt Gingrich colonizing Mars and wanting to build a church or something on it? The thought is just so utterly laughable, yet possible.

  • So you want to destroy the Moon too? It is bad enough we are already destroying the Earth.

  • New ideas always get laughed at.

  • @RBkidd510 its for research dumbfuck. its to further our knowledge of our fascinating universe

  • I would love to see efforts to reach the moon again; they did it in the 1960's when this nation had some of it's most difficult days. Humans, by nature, are explorers and it's sad that society has lost that enthusiasm to discover, it's all about money now. For people to pursue education in the STEM field it would put the US back in place of being a nation of pioneers, few people understand the significance of that. To say "don't go to space" is much like the nay-sayers to the Wright brothers.

  • @EBOWARRIOR Space travel sounds fun, until you realise what's wrong with it. And what's wrong with it, to cut this short and get to the point, is that space is DEAD. EMPTY. BARREN. LIFELESS — devoid of ANY content whatsoever apart from the primitive physical properties of a bunch of blocks floating around.
