This summer's Festival Opera at The Banff Centre features two spectacular pieces: Little Women and The Turn of the Screw.
Little Women
This light, lyrical contemporary opera breathes life into the characters of Louisa May Alcott's classic 19th century novel. Composer and librettist Mark Adamo has taken the popular story of the March sisters -- set during the American Civil War -- and molded it into a melodic portrait of family, creativity, and transformation. Jo March is an aspiring writer growing up in a close-knit family, struggling with her own tempestuous nature, her ambitions at a time when girls were groomed to be wives and mothers, and finding a place in the world with the help of her three sisters and the boy next door.
Sung in English by members of The Banff Centre's Opera as Theatre program, this acclaimed, family-friendly staging is the centerpiece of summer opera in Banff. Conducted by David Agler with Stage Direction by Kelly Robinson.
The Turn of the Screw
Strange and sinister ghosts come to life in an evocative opera by Benjamin Britten, based on Henry James's famous novel. Are the ghosts real? You be the one to determine the exact nature of evil in this story. One of the world's most produced operas since its debut, tracing the chilling emotional journey of a young governess mysteriously assigned to care for two children on a remote English estate.
Shows run August 4 through 8th - please visit www.banffcentre.ca for more details.
