@ThePoisonClan It could be argued that if you give him your money and he's satisfied with that (as in leaving without harming you) you've "defended yourself."
But what if the mugger's not satisfied with your possessions/money, and/or it looks like he means to hurt you? You need to go on the OFFENSIVE (NOT "defend yourself"!) FWIW, throwing your wallet or phone at him could serve as a momentary distraction causing a "hole" in his defense, allowing you to hit him/knife him/shoot him/what have you.

Trying to protect yourself from a mugger, Just throw your phone and wallet at them? sort of goes against the point.
