  • Elkins' voice is enormous, but Long live La Stupenda!!!!!!!!!! Her voice drowns out everybody's at 8:40

    Nobody could/can sing like her.

  • I truly pity those who don't appreciate Sutherland's artistry here.

  • @xafnndapp It depends on how blocked your ears and brain are.

  • THE COMMENT IS NOT RIDICULOUS...IT IS THE PLAIN TRUE !!!!

  • @simisimi9 Oh dear, this comment is ridiculous!

  • @simisimi9

How did you ever think that your pathetic little comments would change history? Sutherland is already a legend....you understand that right? When this performance took place, Callas was dead. How long will you remain bitter that Sutherland went on to sing beautifully long after Maria died?

  • i dont think norma "belongs" to anyone...its pathetic to say that one soprano owns a role....when i think norma i think caballe....but that is me...i dont say caballe owns norma....its my personal preference....lets stop this ridiculous competition..

  • is she singing Norma in a Chinese translation?...

  • i prefer verret

  • ...vocal fireworks.. okay..

  • That's incorrect. Both were great. However, the Callas Normas from 1950-1958 do not suffer from foggy diction, undeveloped low notes and a plain disregard for dramatic inflection. Much as I adore Joanie, Norma belongs to La Divina. Esclarmonde, Lakme etc. belong to La Stupenda however.

  • Maybe technically you're right, but I think Callas was great technically in this role too - she was very clear, including the lower the notes with good diction and true to the music. Sutherland was obviously a phenomenon and I would never take anything away from her and I love her ending here. But for me, when I think of Norma I think of Callas! Just personal preference I guess. Terrible costumes here by the way Pollione seems to look universally bad in all these vids. Thanks coloraturafan.

  • I wonder why just Stevens is criticisied here, he fits perfectly to this deadalive performance...... So boring.

  • i agree ^_^

  • No matter what anyone says about Callas and Norma, for me, the voice I hear in my head whenever I think of Norma is SUTHERLAND. Callas may have delved into characters more, but NO ONE sang this better than Sutherland. Period.

  • Thank goodness for Sutherland and Elkins.

Stevens sounds like... a frog or a goat sometimes!
