The Canon G12 is a handy little camera. I was in Papua New Guinea last week and had to use to take video after my Sony EX-1 malfunctioned. The video quality looks all right, but a shallower depth of field like what you see with DSLR video would be nice. You can't zoom while recording video and the auto-irsis can be annoying as well. I've heard it can be controlled manually with the scroll-wheel.

Both are capable cameras and you can't really pick a winner without getting much deeper into the feature set, and then deciding what is more important to you.
The Nikon is more Pro than the Canon (many more professional tweak options, and the D-Lighting feature that puts the three-shot bracketing of the Canon to shame), but the Canon is easier to use.
My advice is to download both USER GUIDES and compare... you will find surprises that these two clowns missed completely.
