I disagree with this guys opinion that the 2 David Chase statements both suggest Tony dies in this scene. I think the one about you never knowing its going on until it's happened, suggests he's dead, but the one about this is what Tony's future looks like,, seems to be saying he doesn't die here, and the shady looking characters were just to show that Tony would always be looking over his shoulder, even if most times it was all completely innocent., but he probably would one day be killed.

The way I see it is why would the guy have to retrieve the gun from the toilet? In the godfather it was there because he knew he'd be searched before going into the restaurant and so couldn't have it on him. But nobody would search this guy so if he was gonna kill Tony surely he'd already have the gun on him.

@MattSchoch one of the possible shooters was black

what a brilliant ending for the show! as the time passes it just gets better! in the final scene chase created a state of flux (when things could go either way), and thus he transcended his show to our lives. we continue to live different outcomes of his characters. cause the first thing we thought after seeing the black screen is: what happens (next)? that's the essence and question we need to try answering for ourselves. while trying that "don't stop believing" keeps playing in our heads.

@johnacrob "Everything that pertains to that episode was in that episode. And it was in the episode before that and the one before that and seasons before this one and so on. There had been indications of what the end is like. Remember when Gerry Torciano was killed? Silvio was not aware that the gun had been fired until after Gerry was on his way down to the floor. That's the way things happen: It's already going on by the time you even notice it." ----The most recent quote from David Chase.

One other important factor, is that if you have seen The Road, the man, right before he shoots the cannibal near the beginning, explains that he would not hear the sound of the gun shot because the bullet would travel faster than sound. That is why we never hear a gunshot in my opinion.

There are the symbols of 3 in the final scene that everyone is aware of. The ones that I noticed was that carm was the 3rd person to enter the restaurant as Tony was looking up for. There were 3 boy scouts sitting at a table. The hunting looking guy received his coffee with 3 creamers. It took Meadow 3 attempts to park the car. And to push this even further "Don't Stop Believing" is 3 words. lol.

Tony's number was up. Whether from a headshot or Carlo's testimony. Even if Sil had just got winged, He'd be going to the can just from the Fat Dom killing alone. This of course would leave Pauly running the family with Murmur, Warren & Benny. This would leave the family wide open for Butchy to come in and in his own words "absorb the whole fuckin' thing". New York played Pauly like a cheap horn. I noticed how he was left off of the hitlist when Phil wanted to "decapitate".

I think you missed the point. (Don't worry, a lot of people did.) It wasn't about "leaving it open." And the ending was definitive, if you think about it. We know that Tony is past his prime, and that he is likely facing a lengthy trial, and probably prison. We know that Carlo is a rat. We know that some form of equilibrium has been restored to the Soprano nuclear family.
The definitiveness just didn't come in the form of the usual, formulaic, "big-bang" resolution.

i think the ending was bullshit after watching the whole seasone i would think that they owed it to the audience to make a difinative ending weather tony dies or not .its a cop out to leave it open, it only benifits david chase not the fans that supported the whole 6 seasons, its a tv show not a subject for debate now i dont care if he died or not i just think that david chase wants a safty net to come back to if his future work fails!!! if it ended like that in a book i would have burned thebook
Alright Jesus I'll throw in here. David Chase, the creator of the show has definitively said that Tony doesn't get killed in the final scene. As explained in THIS FUCKING VIDEO the ending is about what life will always be like for Tony: Paranoid but with moments of comfort from his family. One day he'll probably get killed or end up in prison but not neccessarily yet. That's it. There's nothing else to read into it.

I agree with everything you said in your commentary about how the series ended, with the exception of your last comment of how Carmella & possibly the kids didn't make it out of the restaurant. If Tony was indeed killed, (in the Italian Mafia), families are never touched; Tony actually is quoted as saying this in one of the episodes. Had it been the Russian; Albanian; Mexican Mob, etc.; then most likely everyone would've died. But in the Italian Mob an entire family would never have been killed
