This is a very long (1.5 min) video of part of the Japanese tea ceremony, taken in Gion Corner in Kyoto. You can see a lot of the very deliberate actions of the ceremony, which are either very graceful or very time wasting depending on who you ask. ;)
(apologies for bad camera work, was taken with handheld digital still camera)
I just love how relaxed I feel just watching it. I'm not sure how long the actual ceremony was, but I could have watched another 5 minutes! Nice camera work for a handheld still!

None of the movements are a waste. They are all there for a reason. One has to move a certain way when wearing a kimono. And kimono are very expensive, you don't want to be dipping sleeves in food and tea. It takes years and years to master the art of the "way of the tea."

I went to this theatre and saw this very woman performing cha no yu when I was in Kyoto. Maybe we were even in the same tour group. ^_^

I went to see the same demonstration at Gion Corner, many years ago. Watching is like throwing me back in time.
It is funny that you say its a very long video. You know some tea ceremonies can last up to four hours long? Now that is long.

The Chanoyu ceremony is beautiful. It's a pain in the butt though when you study it--I'm in the beginners level. But I love the sweets!!! :)
The tea itself is an aquired taste... I have to find a friend who I could preform the ceremony to--most of them run because of the taste of the tea. lols

I have been enthralled by Asian culture since I was pre-teen. Why modern Asian youth choose to identify with 'hip-hop' (non-)culture is beyond me.
