Sonar pulses from a fishfinder will fire straight through a plastic or fiberglass kayak hull as long as there's no air between the transducer bottom and the kayak hull. I use a foam well like this but I just fill it with water instead. For those using glue, take care to avoid trapping bubbles in there.
ok..so the transducer goes right in the hull!?! the only thing you wont get is water temp but the rest will work, depth fish and drop offs and all?? if yes i will be getting a portable sonar
I followed your instructions exactly the way you said and it works perfectly and it even picks up the water temperature.Thank You again for your expert advice:) 5-11-2011
Lexel is a super clear adhesive calk ,it takes 2-4 days to cure " Harden" and 1-2 weeks to completely cure and costs about 8 or 9 dollars a tube. True Value hardware store sells it or you can get it at a home depot or lowes. I hope what capt dick says is true because I did exactly what he said to do yesterday 4-11-2011 I'll keep you posted on the results.

I know that this is an old video.. but you DONT have to make a hole in the kayak? that would be great!!

You can get foam at Michaels or craft store. Cut with drywall saw, works great.

From what I heard the transducer is supposed to be submerged into the
water in order to pickup wave differences/vibrations. What is lexcell, probably your market I'm assuming.
