James Mason in what became a signature role as Field Marshal Erwin Rommel, justly famed and charismatic Commander of the German Afrika Corps during World War II. Oddly, it isn't about Rommel's exploits in North Africa. Instead, the dramatic thread is Rommel's growing disenchantment with Adolf Hitler as the tide of the war begins to turn against Germany in 1942.

Aesthetically speaking the German military were beautiful to look at especially their equipment...and of course the best military in WWII. Pity that the nation and the German military should have had such a neanderthal of a leader in Hitler (killed his niece and girlfi).competent senior German officers should have suspected something was up immediately when Hess went on a civilian plane to the UK to negotiate for peace, and Hitler allowed 340,000 Allied troops to escape to England from Dunkirk.

James Mason's finest hour, in my opinion. When he died, the film reviewer Vincent Canby, in an obituary, called him the "Almost Man", because he was never 'quite' a superstar, and not strictly a character actor either. Actually, his performance skills were so good that I was always glad to see him in ANY role!!
