Neko Case - Vengeance is Sleeping (Bumbershoot '08)

Neko Case at Bumbershoot 2008 in Seattle, Washington on August 30th. The was the fourth of four songs (one was a Harry Nilsson cover) she played from her new album, dubbed "Middle Cyclone," due out in March 2009. (The set was running short, so they added this one in!)

I've always wondered if Neko Case had her heart broken and never fully recovered. This song seems to be the story of that event. I know she felt abandonment when she was a child and so much of her music seems to deal with a certain distrust of humans and her fears in general. Her songwriting is an open door in to her soul and she crafts a sad but beautiful story.

Neko has explained: This song is about being a tomboy, and if you're in love then you're screwed. Also, I believe she is saying that shes thinking back on love lost "You're the one that I still miss". Also, her lyrics: "And my love invented all of you" refers to her realizing he wasn't as great as she originally thought.
