Hohenschwangau Castle (lit: Castle of the High Swan County) was the childhood residence of King Ludwig II of Bavaria and was built by his father, King Maximilian II of Bavaria. It is located in the German village of Schwangau near the town of Füssen, part of the county of Ostallgäu in southwestern Bavaria, very close to the border with Austria.

Neuschwanstein Castle (German: Schloß/Schloss Neuschwanstein, lit. New Swan Stone palace; IPA pronunciation: /nɔɪˈʃvaːnʃtaɪ̯n/) is a 19th century Bavarian palace. Located in Germany, near Hohenschwangau and Füssen in southwest Bavaria, the castle was built by Ludwig II of Bavaria as a retreat and as an homage to Richard Wagner, the King's inspiring muse. Although photography of the interior is not permitted,[1] it is the most photographed building in Germany[2] and is one of Germany's most popular tourist destinations.

  • We always travel in the off season(October through March excluding the holidays) to avoid the throngs of tourist. I was there in December in 1999 and the crowds weren't bad. This video was the most recent trip in March of 2007.

  • Very nice video. We have toured these castles and are planning another trip this fall to visit them again.

The 30 minute trip to Neuschwanstein is UPHILL. You can opt for a horse and buggy ride if you can't make the climb.

  • Cool video. Interesting that there were almost no other there. I thought the place would be full of Japanese and American tourists. Now I actually want to visit the place myself. When did you go there to avoid the masses? - Thanks
