Sound of my truck not running right. After pulling the motor, it turned out the crankshaft broke in 2, most likely due to the engine being externally balanced and the flywheel almost broken into 2 itself. For those wondering, we did replace the crank, main bearings, rod bearings, flywheel, and harmonic dampener. Been running since.

  • Had a 350 SBC break in the # 1 main cap for what ever reason the engine was never driven that hard .. The only thing I can figure is the harmonic ballancer failed just before the crank failed it all happened pretty fast , it got replaced with a 4 bolt main steel crank engine , Iv'e never been impressed with cast GM crank shafts, Ford has more experience with casting cranks and more sucess with them..

  • @kamphwagon1 I haven't had/heard of people having bad luck with GM cranks. I'm fairly certain the reason this one went was a perfect storm of: age, flywheel being broke, harmonic dampener being spun, and the engine being externally balanced. I learned my lesson though. If the timing mark on the dampener doesn't line up with #1 TDC, REPLACE THE DAMPENER. Think I even got some better mpg's once I did that.

  • how does it still run?

  • @xrsrule Crank was broke at an angle, so it was 2 pieces but was working as 1 with a lot of slack. I have a picture of it at my cardomain page (member id is GCountach there as well)

  • @gcountach Heres one for you , a gen 3 chevy 5.4 engine with what sounds like a bad lifter pecking, the guy has had it to different shops, thev'e looked at the rockers, lifters, flywheel and ballancer .. It's got good oil pressure and good compression ... He's been driveing it with no adverse effects ,he bought another engine just incase it blows LOL ,but it's been months and no blown engine yet !...

  • @gcountach All two peice main seal 350 sbc engines are internal ballanced as far as I know you don't realy get into any external ballance issues untill you get into the 400 sbc or 454 V8s , even the 396 & 427 is a internal ballance.. Never had any problems with a chevy 2.8 ,but that dosen't meen shit dosen't happen like my 350 did ,at around 60 mph it was turning less than 2,000 RPM with the converter in lock up when the crank broke ...

  • wehad an golf 1.6 and it was making the same sound the ticking i mean and we just drived through with that thing and after that .the connecting-rod broke and hit a hole in the engine on both sides

  • I drove one for 4 years and always got around 30 mpg

  • @Nickgarage crappy gas milage and no power. what else?

  • poor little rod thrower....
