My revised book review on the book of Jasher, or Sefer Ha Yashar.

Heard the good news? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eC0b6Up_9zE

List of contradictions:
Could Shem have been Melchizedek (Gen. 14:18)? Jasher 16:11 certainly points us in that direction. It says, "And Adonizedek King of Jerusalem, the same was Shem, whent out with his men to meet Abram and his people, with bread and wine, and they remained together in the valley of Melech." It is an interesting possibility to consider that Abraham and his descendants traveled back and forth to visit Shem and Eber.

Jasher 13:5 says that Abram went to the land of Canaan at the age of 50 then back to Haran and back to Canaan at age 75, Genesis 12:4 states that Abram was 75 when he departed Haran.

Jasher 80:2-51 lists these Plagues; Exodus chapters 7-12

1. Waters into blood (v. 3) / Exodus 7:20

2. Frogs (v. 6) / Exodus 8:6

3. Lice (v. 10) / Exodus 8:17

4. The Lord sent all kinds of beasts into Egypt and destroyed all Egypt ( v.13) / Not in Exodus

5. Fiery serpents, scorpions, mice, weasels, toads (v. 14) / Not in Exodus

6. Flies, hornets, fleas, bugs, gnats (v. 15) / Exodus 8:24

7. All reptiles and winged animals came and grieved the Egyptians (v.16) / Not in Exodus

8. God ordered the Sulanuth from the sea, she had long arms, 10 cubits in length and she went upon the roofs and uncovered the raftering and flooring and stretched forth her arm and removed locks and bolts and opened the houses of Egypt. (v. 19-21) / Not in Exodus

9. Pestilence (v.24) / Exodus 9:3

10. Burning inflammation (v. 27) / Not in Exodus

11. Boils (v. 28) / Exodus 9:10

12. Hail and fire (v. 30-31) / Exodus 9:23

13. Locusts (v. 33) / Exodus 10:13

14. Darkness (v.36) / Exodus 10:22

15. First born killed (v. 43) / Exodus 12:29

Chapter 71:1 of Jasher states that Moses was 18 years old when he left Egypt. He didn't go to Midian but to Cush and becomes king (72:34-36) and is king over Cush for forty years (73:2), then he goes to Midian where Reuel puts him in prison for 10 years because Reuel thinks Moses is wanted by the Cushites. In the book of Acts (7:23-30) Stephen, inspired by the Holy Spirit, stated the Moses was in Egypt for 40 Years before going to Midian for another 40 years.

Jasher 81:3-4 claims that the Israelites sojourned in Egypt for 210 years whereas the Scripture says in Exodus 12:40-41 it was 430 years.

Jasher 81:40-41says that all but Pharaoh perished in the Red Sea. Pharaoh thanks the Lord and the Lord sends an angel who casts him upon the land of Nineveh where Pharaoh reigned for a long time. Scripture (Exodus 14:23 & 28) states that all perished.

Scriptures addressed in this video:
Exodus 12:40
Exodus 12:41
Joshua 10:13
2 Samuel 1:17
2 Samuel 1:18
Esther 10:2

  • @GodHasNOMother And that was roughly in the middle of their stay in Egypt which would place it around 220 years residence before the new Pharaoh took up the throne.

  • @GodHasNOMother I think we all should (with the tools and knowledge we have today), re-examine these books. I am not for one moment saying that any of the Apocrypha Books are 'inspired by Yahowah', but I am saying that we have the ability today to dig deeper and search more thoroughly for truths we may have missed in past ages.

  • @GodHasNOMother It would seem that when Cush conquered Egypt many would refer to Egypt as an extension of Cush rather than Egypt at the time... Depending on one's geographical location and knowledge of history (remember news didn't travel that fast in those days), a writer could easily refer to the LIBERATED Egypt still as part of Cush...

  • @GodHasNOMother Could it be possible that the area Moses went to could be considered by some as Egypt and by others as Cush, depending on their view of who actually ruled that area?

  • On the contradiction that Moses went to 'rule as king in Cush'...I want to point out the following. The Kingdom of Kush reached its first peak between 1700 and 1500 BC. In 1600 BC they allied with the Hyksos and conquered Egypt beginning the 2nd Intermediate Period. The Egyptians took back Egypt and much of Nubia 50 years later, establishing great temples at Gebel Barkal and Abu Simbel.

  • Quote : Jasher 13:5 says that Abram went to the land of Canaan at the age of 50 then back to Haran and back to Canaan at age 75, Genesis 12:4 states that Abram was 75 when he departed Haran. COULD IT BE...that the book of Genesis only talks about his second trip, since the first trip was not significant? If the Second trip to Canaan from Haran was at 75, and Genesis only mentions the second trip...it doesn't make for a contradiction, only for more detail from the book of Yashar.

  • All I can say is don't throw the baby out with the bath water. It seems the jury is still out on this one... It seems to be a matter of where you start counting...and since the book of Yashar talks about their time IN HARD LABOR...it obviously EXCLUDES the time they were living in Goshen in peace... Their HARD LABOR only started after a Pharaoh came to power that DIDN'T KNOW THEM...

  • @GodHasNOMother Perhaps in recognition of this problem, a Jewish midrash of the common era attempted to rationalize by stating that Moses protested to God that he could not lead the Hebrews, because they had only been in Egypt for 210 years and had not yet faced the 400 years of oppression that God had foretold to Abraham. God responded that the time of oppression had to be dated from the birth of Isaac, and so 400 years had indeed gone by.

  • @GodHasNOMother Exodus 12:40-41 says the Hebrews spent 430 years in Egypt, although not all of this time is said to have been as slaves. However, the genealogy of Moses does not allow such a long time, since he had to be born sometime between 15 years and 270 years after the arrival in Egypt, lived 120 years and yet led the Israelites on the Exodus for some forty years.

  • @GodHasNOMother Others say 210 years, figuring from the time that "there arose in Egypt a Pharaoh who did not know Joseph. Even here, there's a clear lack of clarity, for while many believe that the oppressive Pharaoh was Ramses II there is (as yet) no conclusive archaeological evidence to support this.
