Ed Alstrom (organ) and Dennis Diken (drums)"
Hits of the 1960s on the 'Mighty Wurlitzer' Theater Organ"

A FREE concert, October 6, 2011, on an amazing instrument with an amazing history! This is the 3-manual, 10-rank pipe organ built by WURLITZER that was installed in the RAINBOW ROOM in NYC in 1934, where it entertained patrons until 1954.
It is now in its 4th home at the RAHWAY SENIOR CENTER, the pipework in virtually original condition (lovingly relocated and restored by the GARDEN STATE THEATER ORGAN SOCIETY; more on them at www.gstos.com).

These beasts roamed the earth roughly between 1900-1950, and were called 'Unit Orchestras', which is a pretty apt description of what they do. From the power of a symphony orchestra, to the whisper of a single flute or violin, the Theatre Pipe Organ fascinates and thrills all who hear it. They don't make 'em like this anymore, and they are relatively scarce now, except for the handful left that accompany silent films in some theaters.
If you've never heard or seen one of these things (or even if you have), it's quite the sonic experience. No samples or synthesis here - just air gusting through pipes, and real percussion instruments triggered pneumatically.

Ed (on organ) and Dennis (on drums), also knows as "TWO GUYS", will tap into their significant knowledge of and love for the music of the 1960s, and push this organ into a new time zone. They will present a dizzying array of 60s instrumental and vocal tunes, both hits and misfires.

  • The organist may have been influenced by Al Kooper, but definitely, the drummer is copping some Hal Blaine licks.
