One of the songs I've written for my upcoming full-length show in Nottingham's Lakeside Arts Centre - this is an affectionate tribute to a particular man in the shadow cabinet.
"There's a man in the Labour party,
And bam, right from the start he
Stole my heart away,
And now I'm gonna make him stay,
He's got unimpeached sentiment,
Even though he has a speech impediment,
He has a lisp it's true,
But there's no S in 'I love you'-
Ed Miliband, Ed Miliband,
The shadow PM no-one can stand
Except me, you're my favourite number two,
Ed Miliband, Ed Miliband, he's
Not exactly Mahatma Ghandi,
You may be a crappy Labour leader,
But I know inside I need a man like you.
I'm in love, now I can't disguise it,
My heart's so big you'll want to nationalise it,
So smile away that frown,
You're almost as electable as Gordon Brown,
There are no options in the party,
Margaret Beckett's like a horse and Diane Abbott is ghastly,
So go for my attraction,
We'll be a union without industrial action:
Ed Miliband, Ed Miliband,
Could we at least have a one-night stand?
Just say yes, and I'll give you my all,
Ed Miliband, Ed Miliband,
You're about as suave as Cillit-Bang,
But at least you're more attractive than Ed Balls.
(he's not very good-looking at all)."
