When you say that you only use one bucket does that mean that you don't use a top bucket with holes in it inserted into a bottom bucket with no holes and just one bucket with no holes? Most people recommend sealing the bucket for two weeks when it's full before putting the scraps in a food processor, composter, etc. Do you wait two weeks or just dump the scraps when the bucket is full?

How long does your bokashi powder last? Meaning does it ever go bad?

Some people don't use bokashi. They take their scraps out every day or so, or they use newspaper to line the container and keep the moisture down thereby delaying the decay process for a few days longer. Some people freeze their scraps all winter so they can dump them into the bin after the snow melts. I am for whatever works for you.

Correct. I do not use the top bucket. Just one bucket, no holes and a lid. I put my food scraps in the food digester bin whenever I get around to it. SOmetimes that is the same day it finally gets full, sometimes it is a week or two later and I have two stacked up outside. Like now, it's been raining and I am lazy. The micro-herd (I love that phrase!) doesn't care. The scraps need to rot and break down after they are put in the digester/composter/dirt anyway.

Also 888zzz,
Also I only use one bucket now. It is much easier. Also I do not add bread to my bucket. Bread makes it go 'off' everytime. I just let my leftover bread dry out and put it right into the food digester. I put flour and sugar in this batch of bokashi for quick food for the micro-herd as it wakes up after you sprinkle it on your food waste but next time I am just going to put in sugar. Flour has too many naturally occurring yeasts. Good for bread, not for bokashi.

Thanks for the comment 888zzz.
I have not had any of the powder go bad. It is very very very dry and I don't think it would go bad. I suppose it could get hot enough to kill the microorganisms if you left it in a real hot car for a long time for instance but I don't really know. Have you seen the stuff on making bokashi out of newspaper?
