In this video, Michael compares the Sony DSC-HX9V and the DSC-HX100V digital cameras. Although both cameras have the same Exmore R CMOS sensor, there are some features that make the HX100V a better value, considering that the difference in the manufacturer's suggested retail price is $100 USD. The HX9V has a 16X Sony G Optical Zoom lens...the HX100V has a Carl Zeiss 30x optical lens. Advantages of the HX100V include: manual focus, an articulating LCD screen, an electronic viewfinder, a longer life battery, a tripod mount that does not interfere with the ability to supply power to the unit while it is mounted to a tripod, and shutter and aperture priority modes. The HX9V is a smaller form factor, making it easier to carry. It also sports a wider angle lens. While both cameras share a new 'background defocus' feature, to maintain sharpness on subject while blurring the background, the HX9V makes this feature more accessible by providing it as an option from the mode dial; on the HX100V, the user must navigate to the scene mode and select background defocus a setting.

While shooting the provided sample video and pictures, it became apparent that the electronic viewfinder and articulating screen make it much easier to shoot better and more consistently framed photographs and videos under sunny conditions.

  • Try slipping the HX100V into your pocket Dude..... As for the loose strap.... make the loop smaller by tying a not in it.

These cameras are aimed at different sectors of the market. I am not sure what the purpose of you're review is.

  • @iamyourfuture808 - You're right. When I put the HX100V in my pocket, people look at me really strange in the city, lol. Seriously, though--I took a trip recently and brought the HX9V. I felt a little guilty, knowing the HX100V was sitting at home...but I tell you what--the HX9V is a super sharp performer. The photo and video quality are awesome and the camera just loves to hang out in a small pocket waiting for a great video/photo opp. The wide angle lens is killer, too!

  • dpreview suggests that the image quality of the HX9v is slightly better than the one of the HX100v. any thoughts on that?

thanks a lot for the review

  • @052CD94877 - Image differences between the two would be attributed to the lens, since cameras have the same sensor. The wide angle lens is pretty sweet on the HX9V, though. ;)

  • Great comparison, but how do you compare the image stabilization of these cameras in video mode? I have the hx9v and I can't believe how well it stabilizes the video.

  • @lsbrasil - The stabilization on both cameras is comparable. I've taken some trips since I did this comparison video. I put the HX9V in my pocket and got some really incredible video and pictures because the camera is so highly portable. You're right--the image stabilization is impressive on this handheld.

  • @crisperjr - That's a good question and one that many people debate. To be honest, depending on the viewing distance from the television and the size of the TV, many people won't notice a huge different between 720 and 1080. I notice the difference, but I'm still amazed by 720p video. I grew up watching over-the-air television broadcasts that had fuzzy reception so any HD source looks great to me! 720 has definite advantage in terms of processing, especially over 1080 video at 60fps.

  • I think you should be comparing the 9v to another compact. And you should compare the 100v to something like the Nikon P500 or P510 when it's released.

  • Thanks! Really good review. Looking forward to more reviews as well as tips.

  • Thanks for the review I almost bought the HX100V but then noticed the wide lense on the HX9V to me much more important.

  • LONG EXPOSURE VIDEO ???????????????????????
