My Ramsey DDF1 Doppler Direction Finder kit. I built this kit and the main unit took a day to build, however it was worth taking my time. The kit shown in this video is the first test run or bench testing conducted on the DDF1 kit I have constructed. I will do another video in action when I have it set up in the car.
Question; do you have to calibrate the unit every time you're looking for a signal? Seems to me if that's the case, it defeats the purpose. If the item is to locate the source of signals, it makes no sense to have to calibrate the unit based on knowledge of the direction the transmission is coming from. Or did I miss something?
When you install the unit into a car and set up the antenna, yes you align and test it using a low power transmitter and you are then set to go. Once calibrated, the settings should remain from that point.
For me, I do a quick calibration test in the open before tracking to ensure it is right.
I like using the Doppler to get close but also have a small 3 element Yagi with a VK3YNG sniffer for VHF that gets you right up to the source.
Cheers for the comments. Yours sounds interesting. I have heard of the Pico Dopp, but have not seen one in action. Hope to see a vid of yours soon! :)
Time permitting, yes that would be the best test. Will post when I have done the in vehicle test.
