MIDI File, Notation File and Backing Track File for this video are all available on my website at:

My McCoy Tyner Style videos are some of the most popular style requested.

I have tried to add some annotations to help in the understanding this style of playing. There is a lot of mixing and matching of pentatonics and repetitive rhythmic motifs.

IMO, one of the keys for me when playing in this style is to have set "landing zones" or "safety zones". These are chords and lines that give the listener a reference point within the context of the improvisation. When taking the improv "outside" the listener needs some reassurance that you will bring them back. It is the whole tension and resolve that makes for the excitement and the "safety zones" allow for a point of reference to the listener.

Production Notes:
I am using a Roland FP-4 keyboard. Backing track created with Band-in-a box with additional cymbal work courtesy of the FP-4 drum kit. On-screen keyboard from PGMusic Powertracks Pro captured with BB Flashback Pro software by Blueberry Software. Per request, Left and Right hands split red and blue, although not exact.Video compositing done with Adobe Premiere Elements and final rendering with Serif MoviePlus X3.

  • WOW, i also really enjoyed your video of resolution. If i were to offer constructive criticism, which i'm reluctant to do because your a much better musician than myself, i would say some of the fast licks have a little shaky time, but just a tiny bit.

  • @friedmanguitar I appreciate your comment.

  • Here we go... The phrasing, scales and melodic sequencing of MCcoy tyner. This is his style. If yhe saw this he would wonder "when did I record this?"

This was perfect dude. You = beast

  • @danieljones013 Thanks for the comment, you made my day.

  • great left hand. but do you play d minor flat 5?

  • @SuperHelmut12 Yes, but mostly only during the melody (you'll see the Ab played in my left hand). During the solo I probably leave it out more than I put it in.

  • You have a really great style. Wish I had your proficiency. I'm putting together some piano instruction and love how the digital keyboard above really spells out what you are doing? What program do you use to sync that with your video?

  • Wow, this is really amazing stuff! Had the pleasure of seeing McCoy at the old Lighthouse in Hermosa Beach as well as the Shrine Auditorium. Is there any way to slow the solos down for transcription purposes, or do you have these transcribed? I'm a buyer if you have this written out.

  • You have the quartal/pentatonic/sus thing down cold! I really enjoy your YouTube channel although I am not a pianist, but still learning from watching and hearing. The written analysis in this video was very useful to me. Have you recorded any albums?

  • I always love to watch this. McCoy Tyner it is. it's like I'm in the bebop era. You're fantastic. *****
