Short video on the deaths of Arthur, Prince of Wales and Elizabeth of York.

Starkey's claim that Arthur died of testicular cancer is odd, especially considering this was not mentioned in his written work. Ultimately what exactly killed Arthur is unknown although the lack of mention of an ongoing illness in contemporary records, along with the shock recorded by his death, implies that his demise came suddenly. In his work, Starkey hints that Arthur's health had suffered owing to excessive sexual practises. However it is unknown whether Arthur's marriage to Katherine of Aragon was consummated and even Starkey does not specifically state that this is what killed him.

Perhaps Arthur died of the famous sweating sickness, or maybe some other kind of infection. Tuberculosis has also been claimed. Perhaps the matter will be resolved in an upcoming book on Arthur - S.J. Gunn and Linda Monckton (ed.), "Arthur Tudor, Prince of Wales: Life, Death and Commemoration" (Sept 2009):

  • Oh good. Now she can take another era in English history and write historical fiction that has no actual historical accuracy. If you want good historical fiction set in the Tudor era, read something by Robin Maxwell. Her books are some of my favorite.

  • OM gosh Damian that was beautiful! A keeper that! So gracefully done

  • If you want a good read try the Autobiography of Henry 8 by Margret George. It is really interesting becuse it is Henry's POV

  • Whatever Arthur died of, Katherine had it too and recovered, or so i hear. Therefore, i highly doubt it was testicular cancer. More likely to be the sweating sickness or something similar.

  • Whatever Arthur had it could have been the medicine that hastened his end, they gave him arsenic as part of his treatment

  • Well thats youtr opinion, but all fiction involves aspects of imagination, facts can only get you so far. Some of the points she makes in the books aree factual and others use facts and imagation as a basis. But thank you for your suggestion I will look at books by Robin Maxwell.

  • Personally I think you are right Ye Old tune

I think he died of sweating sickness or TB
