"Shoot me!" , Lennon was screeming every time much more clearly in the original take ( the one is an initial take of the song) ;) If you say "Why?" I'd rather propose you to listen more careful final part of the song, where John sang (by the way, with laughing...over whom, how do you think?) another way then it is in his "official" lyrics. To help you some more, let's see what does it mean: "Come together OVER me!" - I am sure it means "AGAINST me". So, the song is not so simple as it seems. :)

i knew john used tricks to make his voice sound like that on the album, i was trying to learn this but gave up on the vocals
