On July 24, 2010, the stranger from Texas began the ascent of Mt. Fuji's summit in Japan. The first night I climbed, it was hailing with a lot of rain in and lightning in Kawaguchiko. So I stayed at a hostel at Station 7.5. I began to climb again at around 6:30 am after a hearty breakfast of ramen soup with beef, and I reached the summit at 9:20 am. I passed many Asian climbers and was the only American at the summit during the time I spent up there. It was a very difficult challenge, and I was able to capture most of the climb and some wonderfully beautiful scenery. Climbing to the top of Japan without oxygen or climbing sticks proved difficult, yet as I approached the summit, my adrenaline kicked in full blast! All shot on a Canon Elph 1400SD. What a day in my life that I will never forget!

  • I would prepare for cold and wind/rain and cold nights on the mountain. Take a good pair of hiking boots for the descent (which is WAY harder than the ascent). I didn't use climbing poles or oxygen, but a lot of people had them. The poles might have helped on the way down for sure. I would leave around 6 pm and climb to the 7.5 or 8th station, sleep at a hostel and make the early morning summit as the clouds usually roll in around 10 am or so. Hope that helps!
