MiTi® 100 HP Oil-Free High-Speed Compressor/Blower

The design procedures and testing program in the development of a 100 HP single shaft permanent magnet motor driven centrifugal compressor/blower using MiTi® compliant foil bearings coated with Korolon™. The development program included design tradeoff studies assessing motor rotor and bearing configurations, selection of the compressor/blower, and design of the system thermal management system. The test program consisted of assessing the dynamics, thermal management of the system and testing to assess compressor/blower flow and pressure performance. This program demonstrates the successful integration of MiTi® oil-free foil bearings, 4-pole composite wound permanent magnet motor, thermal management capabilities and a state of the art centrifugal compressor. This video documents the demonstration of MiTi®'s Oil-Free compressor/blower's power. It is operating at 60,000 rpm producing an airflow of 0.5 kg/sec (880 scfm)

It is 80KW of output power from the drive. The drive is fed with a 480V 175A dedicated electrical service. The table is not bolted down. The motor is fed by 4 4AWG wires, three phases of power and a ground. 60,000 RPM Oil free and water cooled.

This is most likely a dc brushless motor, and yes @ this size it can very well be 100hp. Also notice that this is very similar to the compressor of a turbocharger so it doesent produce as much flow as a 100hp fan would. However this thing can produce maybe 5 atmospheres of pressure, maybe more, but not alot of flow, this is why the valve is only half open, to convert some of this pressure into a high speed jet of air.

Well, it's liquid cooled and driven by an inverter, so that brings the size down a lot. It's similar to the motors they use in electric cars. The motor might be 100HP, but it doesn't necessarily mean that the load is drawing 100HP. 60,000RPM though is pretty fast so it's possible.
