Carey Beebe demonstrating tongue installation in the simple wooden harpsichord jacks.

Being careful of the tongue tail spring, index the notch over the axle on the back face of the jack and snap down. Check that the top bevel of the tongue always rests on the cloth pad. A tongue can be removed by pressing with a thumb on each side of the axle on the face of the jack.

  • @CembaloMeister We would like to supply more historic jacks for our builders. The tongue silencing pads on these German-made jacks are not ideal. If you reglue the offending ones with a wood glue instead of the original rubber cement, ensuring the pad is low enough in the housing, that may be a improvement. You can always ask Anne Acker for advice.

  • I am not a fan of the cloth pads that are on the top of the tongues. They move about which messes up the tongue positioning. I've removed several on my Flemish double and used a type of leather which provides better coverage. I wish TPW could redesign this particular element of the simple jack construction.
