"Report from the Abyss: Massive Black Holes" was a talk by Reinhard Genzel at the Opening Ceremony of the International Year of Astronomy 2009.

Evidence has been accumulating for several decades that many galaxies harbour central mass concentrations that may be in the form of black holes with masses between a few million to a few billion times that of the Sun.

Reinhard Genzel is Managing Director at the Max-Planck-Institut fuer extraterrestrische Physik, Garching, Germany

This video presentation, from the ceremony held in UNESCO, Paris is featured on the IAF channel courtesy of the International Astronomical Union and UNESCO. The event was co-ordinated by the Observatoire de Paris.
