An animation created from daily sea ice concentration data from the National Snow and Ice Data Center, illustrating the shrinkage of the polar ice cap to a record extent in September 2007.

While the Arctic ice cap is normally at its minimum during September, this year's retreat is already 20% lower than ever recorded.

  • Hey genius! You don't know how much it expands over a given year. What I know is that there has NEVER been a Northwest passage through the ice up until this century. Look at the animation: you can see a NW passage north of Canada!!! But don't believe you eyes, trust the right-wing propaganda machine.

  • That's where Santa's workshop is.

  • There's no such thing as a hole. Don't you think it's a little naïve to think glaciologists would "blot out" the entire north pole just to make sure people don't see the "opening" to the "miraculous world beneath our feet"? You'd think they'd be a little more creative. But hey, feel free to believe whatever you want to believe. I'm sure even my most convincing, most scientific arguments would be dodged by your fanatism. Personally I'm a geographer. I don't need to believe, I know.

  • Scientists prefer to leave blanks on a map when they only have discontinuous data. This doesn't mean they don't know how things are going there - it means the satellites they use simply don't deliver those images. That will all be solved, btw, when CRYOSAT is launched.

  • Nice try, but I'm not convinced. Any fool can see that it's blotted out. I will send you a video where you can see the hole.

  • That's because these data are collected by satellites, which actually do not cross the geographical poles, but cross the arctic and antarctic regions a few degrees away from the poles. (this is because that way they are able to cover the entire rest of the world, a bit like a spirograph which also leaves a hole in the middle). Since these satellites never fly right above the poles, they have no data about these area's as well. It's quite a common image in glaciology actually

  • To hide AGARTHA.

  • It's the opening to AGARTHA(inner earth).

  • Duh...I wonder why the north pole is blotted out(big black dot)???

  • i say if you show a video, show more than a month of the year in which the ice in the arctic retreats the most...

have some fucking balls and show year round footage... in one year, it massively expands and decreases... but oh no that's not a good story
