i base my techniques on what makes the wood cut so smoothly that i dont ned sandpaper, not on what i can afford to pay for my gouges.

When you become more accomplished , you will use less expensive shallow gouges for outsides of bowls. They clear the cut wood more easily and are less expensive. Save your deep fluted gouges for long reaches on the inside of bowls. Keep up the good work!!! Practice, practice practice!!
