The majority of Toronto pedestrian crossing signals include a feature not commonly found in many other Canadian cities--countdown timers--which I find extremely beneficial to controlling pedestirans. Especially on very busy roads, pedestrians who start crossing too late and hold up traffic can be a significant hindrance to motorists.
Canadian pedestrian crossing signals, in contrast to most American ones I've seen, also use graphical symbols rather than words, which I think to be a better system.
I saw some of those in St. Johns, New Brunswick back in 2008

We have a lot of crosswalk signals with countdown timers here in the USA.
