The term Protean Self has been used to describe both artists and social-networkers with invested interest in self-portraiture and self-representation. The term itself comes from the Greek Sea God Proteus - God of Mutliple Forms - and is used by Robert Lifton to acknowledge the self in a situation of psychological and geographical uncertainty.
It is used to describe the self as malleable and many-sided, with a behaviour that is unplanned and developed through either a process of (and in reaction to) persistent experimentation and presentation.
Lifton claims that Proteanism may be brought on by rapid historical and technological developments that make it difficult for both the individual and its community to keep up with. The Protean Self is therefore considered to emerge from changing working and social conditions in the twenty-first century with great resilience but also with a sense of humour and self-mockery.
