In this episode I introduce you to LibreOffice, and show you how to install it on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. The newest version of Ubuntu already comes with LibreOffice, but for those of you who are not using Ubuntu, or who prefer to use the more stable long term support version (LTS), I hope you find this tutorial useful.

  • is libreoffice safe and will it not crash or damage my computer

  • @omari86 As long as you download it from the official site, and your computer meets the minimum system requirements, you shouldn't have any trouble running LibreOffice. It doesn't come with any viruses, if that is what you are worried about.

  • Is it possible to (horizontally or vertically) split views in LO Writer?

  • @bnleez This is a feature which has been requested for quite a while, but it has yet to be implemented.

  • @MsRaydale It appears that LibreOffice will open the document at the last point where you edited. If this is not what you want, you can work around that by inserting a blank comment where you want it to open up, save the document, and then close it. When you open it back up, it should open to your comment. You can then delete the comment and continue on with your document.

  • libreoffice is better its free

  • @SayfAlMujahid99 You can certainly do so, and then you wouldn't have to be worried about the Microsoft Office License.

  • Quick question when I had OpenOffice when I opened a document it started where I left off(Say in the middle of a document not the end) however LibreOffice always starts from the top for me. Can I change that?

  • @moonshiry For many distros released in the last 6 months, LibreOffice comes preinstalled. The version of Ubuntu that I show in the video did not come with LibreOffice, but the newest version does. There is also a nice graphical installer you can use to install add or remove it. That being said, don't be intimidated by the command line. It may not seem inviting, but there are a lot of helpful resources out there to get you started.
