Jean-Pierre Melville's 1969 French Resistance masterpiece is "The best film of 2006!" (Premiere, New York Times, L.A. Weekly, Sight and Sound, Film Comment).
Jean-Pierre Melville's masterpiece about the French Resistance against the Nazi occupation went unreleased in the United States for thirty-seven years, before its triumphant theatrical debut in 2006. Atmospheric and gripping, Army of Shadows is Melville's most personal film, featuring Lino Ventura, Paul Meurisse, Jean-Pierre Cassel, and the incomparable Simone Signoret as intrepid underground fighters who must grapple with their own brand of honor in their battle against Hitler's regime.

@FlyingOverTr0ut Oh, but I hate this trailer. What a bastardized version of "Action! Suspense! Hair-raising sunts!" thing that tries to nudge the movie in the direction of looking like every generic movie trailer for an action movie.

That's partially true. I think the film was more about the non-heroic elements within the resistance. It worked to remove all the romanticized notions about the resistance by drawing from Melville's own experiences of working in the resistance.
