This song belongs to Judy, but Shirley sings it very beautiful, as well.
Daanemartina has uploaded a fantastic live version of this song from Shirley's concert in Australia in 1978 where she sang it as a tribute to her friend Judy.

"Over the Rainbow" (often referred to as "Somewhere over the Rainbow") is a classic ballad song with music by Harold Arlen and lyrics by E.Y. Harburg. It was written for the movie The Wizard of Oz, and was sung by Judy Garland in that movie. Over time it would become Garland's signature song.

In the film, part of the song is played by the MGM orchestra over the opening credits. About 5 minutes later, Garland, in the role of Dorothy Gale, sings Over the Rainbow after unsuccessfully trying to get her aunt and uncle to listen to her regarding an unpleasant incident involving Dorothy's dog Toto and the nasty spinster Miss Gulch, whom Toto bit after she struck him with a rake. Dorothy's Aunt Em tells her to "find a place where you won't get yourself into any trouble", prompting the girl to walk off by herself and sing the song.

  • this is from the rather under rated LP `Yesterdays` (1978) listen to `you made you love me` and the outakes `NatureBoy` & `MY MAN` not released until 1994.

  • @IFINEVERSING I love these songs you mentioned. Pity they remained unreleased till 1994.

  • @peterbutz The song was written in 1938, true, but Judy Garland recorded the song originally and introduced it in ''The Wizard of Oz''. Bea Wain's version is a cover which is also very good.

  • @peterbutz Actually, Bea Wain recorded it in 1939. But I think it's just a tad more identified with Miss Judy than with Miss Bea. Though I like both of them.

  • Shirley does a great job with this class song...Great Picture show Jonas!

  • I saw her live in '78 and we were hanging onto the seats her voice was so powerful! You couldnt believe someone could make such a sound

  • It is wonderful to see photos of Shirley Bassey in everyday life, offstage,

along with the other pictures. Both onstage and off, she is regal, elegant,

    and glamourous.

  • @peterbutz It does belong to both of them, come on, as Garland brought this song to millions of people, she IS the only singer who made this song "the most beloved song on earth", anyway, Bassey's is another beauty

  • the voice !!!!!!!!!!!

  • hi

  • This song DON'T belong to Judy Carland, the ORIGINAL was a year earlier recorded by BEA WAIN in 1938
