Wondering how LASS First Chair would handle "The Eleanor Rigby Sound", I banged out a few bars. Then a few more. And before I knew it had the whole thing roughed out. I looked everywhere for an example like this when I was shopping for LASS, so I thought I'd post this in case everyone else was interested. The transcription is by ear so I don't know if all the parts are exactly right, but I did stay true to the double string quartet instrumentation.

There are some unison phasing issues in the sustained notes, and the sustains don't have nearly enough vibrato to sound like the original version. But the short articulations are crazy good sounding I think. The samples are so pristine, I tried to "age" the mix by bumping the heck out of the mids and applying some strong saturation/limiting.

Here's what I was modeling: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lgv-C7yE8RA. I'm surprised by how wet it is. I guess George Martin re-reverberated it in the 90s for the CD version?

My general thoughts are that I LOVE the short articulations, but the legatos (while they can be terrific sounding) were a little tough to get right. That being said, it's still one of the most intuitive sample libraries I know of.

  • its good work and fine until 19 second, when your reverb kick in,i dont know what you use, but it suck big time, take a look at altiverb with subtle setting,

  • @lapmarty Huh...Waves IR-1 with a Bricasti M7 quad-channel impulse...One man's suck is another man's doesn't suck apparently. The reverb is present from the beginning, and is a bit too high, I agree. But I refer you to this recording for what I was modelling: watch?v=Lgv-C7yE8RA.

  • @erikscull yes i can see where you were trying to get at but i would cut off some middle -3db in the tail of your reverb, there is something synthetic about it lack the space from the anthology version,

but it is just amatter of tweaking overal the playing is right on,

  • @lapmarty Yeah, I bumped the mids on the main mix (post-reverb, if I remember correctly) trying to make it sound "older". You're certainly right...some more care could have been taken in the mix dept.

  • Might I ask? How did you setup the different articulation lanes under each instrument?

  • @ancientwhale I like to use Reaper's track folders, so that every instrument family has a folder (strings, brass, ww, perc), and then every instrument is a track folder with the articulations set up as tracks within. I prefer this to keyswitches personally, and the track folder routing in Reaper makes submix stems, mixing, and effects easy to do.
